“Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better.” Inspired by this profound quote of Pat Riley insight, staff of the University assembled in elegance and shared pride for the first edition of the annual staff Award Ceremony held at the rooftop Auditorium of the University. The event stood as a shining reflection of a university community that continually reaches higher, honours dedication, and boldly advances on its journey toward academic and institutional greatness.

BMU illuminated the academic calendar with brilliance and prestige as it hosted its Annual Award Ceremony on Thursday, 5th February 2026. The remarkable gathering brought together the university’s management, staff, and students in a grand celebration of excellence, unwavering dedication, and distinguished service within the BMU community.

In his warm and heartfelt opening remarks, the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Prof. Godwin Ziriki, expressed profound appreciation to members of staff whose tireless commitment and invaluable contributions continue to propel the university toward the fulfillment of its noble vision and mission. His words resonated deeply, setting the tone for an evening of gratitude and recognition.

The highlight of the occasion was the inspiring keynote address delivered by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dimie Ogoina, whose visionary leadership continues to steer BMU toward greatness. With clarity and conviction, he affirmed that Bayelsa Medical University is firmly on a journey to excellence, powered by the dedication and resilience of its staff who serve as the engine driving the university’s ASPIRE vision.

In a defining and commendable moment, the Vice Chancellor announced that the End of Year Award Ceremony will henceforth become an annual tradition - a bold and progressive initiative that reflects his deep commitment to fostering motivation, recognizing merit, and strengthening institutional pride. The university community owes profound gratitude to Prof. Ogoina for institutionalizing this culture of recognition, which underscores his belief that human resources and staff welfare remain central pillars of BMU’s growth and transformation. He also commended the Chairman and members of the Organising Committee for orchestrating a flawless and memorable event.

Ensuring transparency and integrity in the selection process, Dr. Sylva Ligeiaziba briefed the university community on the clear and fair criteria used in identifying award recipients, reinforcing confidence in the credibility of the exercise.

The ceremony witnessed the presentation of numerous prestigious awards, honouring individuals whose dedication and achievements have significantly enriched the university.

BEST SENIOR NON-TEACHING STAFF AWARD

Mr. Ebiye Precious Peter received the, presented by the Registrar, Dr. Felicia Akusu.

THE YOUNG SCHOLAR AWARD, presented by Prof. Godwin Ziriki, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Sampou Campus, was awarded to

Dr. Obienu Anayochukwu Chukwunso.

COMMUNITY SERVICE ENGAGEMENT AWARD, presented by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Benjamin Tabowei, was bestowed upon Ms. Ebitimitula Emma Ogola.

Ms. Natasha E. Ogah, Best Faculty Officer of the Year;

• Mr. Wariebi Kingsley (ICT INNOVATION CHAMPION)

• Reginald Opueye for Digital Innovation; (DIGITAL CHAMPION)

• Mr. Richman Perekimi Famous for Security; (SECURITY CHAMPION)

• Prof. Chidinma D. Olukole for Accreditation; (ACCREDITATION CHAMPION)

• Dr. Marie Teibowei for outstanding leadership support. (ASPIRE CHAMPION)

Adding vibrancy and cultural splendour to the celebration were captivating dance and drama performances by the BMU Cultural Troupe and Drama Team, whose colourful displays infused the atmosphere with joy and pride.

The ceremony concluded on a gracious note with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by the Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Felicia Akusu, who expressed sincere appreciation to all participants, organizers, and award recipients. The University Chaplain, Prof. Stephen Olali, offered the closing prayer, drawing the memorable evening to a dignified close.
