The resounding promise made during his inaugural address-was not mere rhetoric. Today, that bold declaration stands gloriously fulfilled. Under the dynamic, digital, globally-minded and indefatigable leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, BMU has successfully been accredited for the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) programme and has been granted approval for an increase in admission quota from 100 to 150 for each session! What was once an ambitious pledge is now becoming a shining testament to visionary leadership, strategic execution, and uncompromising excellence. The Vice-Chancellor’s guiding maxim-has become the moral compass of the institution. His culture of accountability, and relentless follow-through has redefined governance at BMU. Indeed, his tenure is ushering in a renaissance-an era marked by speed, substance, digitalization and sustainable transformation. MDCN Endorsement: Established under the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act of 18 December 1963, the Council remains the statutory guardian of medical and dental education standards in Nigeria. Under the distinguished leadership of: Professor Afolabi Lesi, Chairman of the Governing Council and Professor Fatima Kyari, Registrar/Chief Executive Officer. The MDCN continues to uphold the highest benchmarks of professional integrity and academic excellence. The Council’s accreditation of the MBBS Programme for BMU following the report of the bverification visitation on the 20 th of February 2026, represents far more than an administrative milestone. It is a powerful affirmation of BMU’s rising stature as a centre of excellence in medical education-both within Nigeria and on the global stage. The accreditation delegation to BMU was ably led by the accomplished Deputy Registrar, Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma-a meticulous administrator and seasoned regulator renowned for fairness, depth, and unwavering integrity in accreditation processes. He was accompanied by an esteemed team of professionals drawn from academia, clinical practice, and regulatory service -each contributing to a thorough and transparent evaluation process. In a letter dated 23 rd February, 2026 Professor Fatima Kyari, Registrar/CEO of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria conveyed her congratulations and best wishes to the Vice Chancellor, Staff and students of the University. This landmark accreditation exercise carries joyful and profound implications for BMU students of Medicine and Surgery: What This Means for MBBS Students 1. Academic Stability and Confidence: Current and prospective students can pursue their medical education with assurance, knowing the programme meets and exceeds national quality benchmarks. BMU Medical students can now proceed to write their part 2 exams. Also the MBBS programme is on course to graduate the first set of medical doctors in the next few years. 2. Increased Competitiveness and Diversity: This milestone is set to attract exceptional applicants from across Nigeria and the diaspora, strengthening academic diversity and excellence within the programme. The Constellation Behind the Transformation: While the Vice-Chancellor stands as the architect-in-chief of this transformation, he is supported by a formidable constellation of administrators, academics, and professionals-arguably the finest management team any leader could dream of. Together, they are the engines powering BMU’s meteoric rise. Their synergy, commitment, and professionalism have fortified the Vice-Chancellor’s mission and accelerated the university’s rapid evolution. We also specially congratulate the Governing Council led by Prof. Tarilah Tebepah, the College of Medicine led by the Provost Professor Philip Eyimina for a wonderful job, all Principal officers, Deans, Professors, Directors, Hods, staff and students of the univeristy for their support!
