Bayelsa Medical University Hosts Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) for Accreditation Exercise for Medical Laboratory Science Programme

On Thursday, July 2, 2026, Bayelsa Medical University hosted a three-member accreditation team from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) for the accreditation exercise of the university’s Medical Laboratory Science Programme.

The two-day exercise showcased the university’s commitment to academic excellence and the training of qualified and certified health care personnel. The exercise began with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dimie Ogoina's, welcome speech to the council, in which he highlighted the steps the school had already taken to ensure compliance in training the future global medical laboratory scientist. He described the exercise as a necessary and positive step forward and pledged full cooperation.

Consequently, the team began a thorough tour of the campus, starting at the library, where they assessed the availability and relevance of texts and resources available to students of the institution. Also, the team painstakingly toured the labs available to the programme, which included the Haematology/Blood Transfusion Science Laboratory, the Chemical Pathology Laboratory, the Histopathology and Cytology Laboratory, the Medical Microbiology and Parasitology Laboratory, the Anatomy Museum, the Biochemistry Lab, and the Physiology Lab.

On the second day, Friday, July 3, 2026, the team visited the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri, where the CMD, Prof. Johnbull Jumbo, welcomed the team and lecturers of the department. Dr (Mrs) Marcella Tari Joshua, pioneer HOD of the medical laboratory science department, thanked the CMD for his continued collaboration with the department and the school at large. The CMD reaffirmed the MOU between the university and the institution, stating that the NDUTH is committed to the training and accelerated improvement of students and interns. The team also toured the labs in the institution and concluded with a courtesy call on the chief medical laboratory scientist.

The exercise concluded with a return to the department and concluding remarks of the vice-chancellor, who expressed hope and confidence in the forward momentum of the institution and her departments.
