NEW YEAR MESSAGE FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR OF THE BAYELSA MEDICAL UNIVERSITY-BMU, YENAGOA.

Dear BMU Community, As we turn the page to 2026, I want to wish all our dedicated staff, inspiring students, and esteemed stakeholders a Happy New Year! Your unwavering support has been pivotal in our collective achievements, and I am deeply grateful for your commitment to making the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) an institution of excellence. As a relatively young university established in 2018, BMU is steadily progressing toward global recognition for excellence in medical education, innovation, and research. Following my inauguration as Vice Chancellor, I introduced the ASPIRE Agenda in October 2024, -a vision designed to drive our comprehensive transformation. This strategic initiative emphasizes academic excellence, community engagement, and technological advancements. Reflecting on 2025, we accomplished many significant milestones, including: • Achieving 100% accreditation from the NUC for programs such as Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health, and Community Health (5-year accreditation) and Optometry, Physiotherapy, and Nutrition and Dietetics (2-year accreditation). The next phase of MBBS accreditation is expected next year, alongside other programs preparing for accreditation. • Hosting an international symposium and conferences, which provided vital platforms for knowledge exchange. • Launching the BMU Medical Journal - Advances in Medical and Health Sciences Journal, enhancing our research visibility. • The establishment of the Talk-to-VC App, allowing students to send direct messages to me and fostering transparent communication. • The launch of Nigeria’s first VR/AI Mixed Reality Studio, enhancing our educational approach. • Securing vital research grants from the Wellcome Trust and MHRA/CEPI to bolster our research initiatives. • The approval of new staff employment by His Excellency, Governor Senator Douye Diri, whose unwavering support has been invaluable. • Implementing a comprehensive staff welfare package that includes monetary incentives for staff who have experienced a loss or are celebrating milestones, reflecting our commitment to community well-being. • Enhancing working conditions through renovations of offices and student hostels, procurement of new office furniture, and upgrades to classrooms and auditoriums. • Introducing free campus-wide internet access, installing CCTV cameras for enhanced security, and acquiring new buses, utility vehicles, and official cars through government support. While we celebrate these accomplishments, we recognize challenges ahead, particularly in navigating resource allocations and meeting the diverse needs of our community. However, I am confident that our resilience and collaboration will enable us to overcome these obstacles. Looking forward to 2026, we anticipate even greater transformations at BMU, including: • A continued expansion of accreditations for innovative programs, focusing on maintaining the highest standards. • Full operationalization of the BMU Clinical Skills Lab for our MBBS program, enhancing practical training. • The introduction of a robotic AI medical tutor and AI tutors for all students, augmenting our educational resources. • Conclusion and approval of our 5-Year Strategic Development Plan by Senate and Council, expected by the end of the first quarter of 2026. • The commencement of postgraduate programs in 2026, expanding our academic offerings and opportunities. • Full operational implementation at our Sampou Campus, providing broader opportunities for learning and growth. • Ongoing consolidation of Tetfund high-impact interventions to maximize their benefits for our community. • Hosting a Staff Award Ceremony to recognize outstanding contributions to our university. I would like to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the steadfast support we have received from His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, along with other relevant governmental bodies. Their unwavering commitment has been instrumental in our progress and achievements. To all members of the BMU community, your ongoing support and cooperation are essential as we navigate this transformative journey together.
