BAYELSA MEDICAL UNIVERSITY WELCOMES NEW STAFF INTO THE ASPIRE VISION
Bayelsa Medical University has taken another significant step towards strengthening its workforce and sustaining its culture of excellence with the successful induction and training exercise for newly employed Academic and Non-Academic Staff, organized by the ASPIRE Empowerment and Welfare Committee.
The programme, designed to acquaint new staff with the University’s vision, values, governance structure, and operational policies, reflects the institution’s unwavering commitment to staff development, institutional growth, and the realization of the transformational ASPIRE Agenda.
The training exercise was attended by the Vice-Chancellor and Keynote Speaker, Prof. Dimie Ogoina; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Sampou Campus, Prof. Godwill Ziriki; the Registrar, Dr. Felicia Akusu; the University Librarian, Dr. Abraham Etebu; the University Bursar, Dr. Ebipuodo Ombu; as well as members of faculty and non-academic staff, reflecting the University’s collective commitment to staff development and institutional excellence.
The Registrar, Dr. Felicia Akusu, welcomed the new members of staff into the University community. She encouraged them to remain focused, diligent, and committed to their responsibilities, emphasizing that collective effort and dedication are essential to achieving the University’s vision of attaining global recognition.
In his keynote lecture titled “The ASPIRE Agenda,” the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dimie Ogoina, welcomed the new staff to what he described as the fastest-growing university in the country. He noted that the induction programme provides an opportunity for staff to become familiar with the University’s leadership, faculty members, institutional values, and the expectations placed on every member of the University community.
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the University’s transformation agenda, anchored on the motto “Global Impact,” stressing that credibility, accountability, high standards, and an innovative mindset are indispensable qualities expected of every staff member. He also reiterated that Bayelsa Medical University operates an open-door policy that encourages transparency, collaboration, and mutual respect.
Prof. Ogoina further emphasized that the University places a high premium on faculty development and quality assurance for both teaching and non-teaching staff as critical drivers of academic excellence. According to him, the institution is committed not merely to producing graduates but to producing the best and most employable graduates through a culture of excellence.
Speaking on the future of the institution, the Vice-Chancellor stated that Bayelsa Medical University is on a journey to greatness, driven by strategic partnerships, major grant opportunities, and the integration of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence and robotics, into teaching and learning. He charged the newly employed staff to align themselves with the vision and mission of the University, reminding them that no individual is above the laws and regulations guiding the institution, as Bayelsa Medical University maintains zero tolerance for indiscipline.
The Director of Training and Development, Dr. Guagha Micky Berezi, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the staff conditions of service, rights and responsibilities, professional ethics, and workplace conduct. He also provided a brief history of the establishment of the University and explained that the ASPIRE Agenda has been fully integrated into the University’s Strategic Plan. He noted that the recruitment of the new staff was a deliberate effort to harness their skills and expertise towards the realization of the University’s strategic objectives. Dr. Berezi urged the participants to discharge their duties with diligence while embracing teamwork, humility, and strict compliance with the University’s laws and policies.
Also speaking, Dr. Kokobaiye Angaye presented a detailed overview of the University’s governance structure and administrative processes. His presentation focused on the University’s organogram, clearly outlining the various administrative and academic structures, lines of authority, and the roles and responsibilities of key officers within the institution.
The sessions provided participants with a clearer understanding of the University’s operational framework and reinforced the importance of accountability, effective communication, and institutional discipline.
The induction and training exercise reaffirmed Bayelsa Medical University’s commitment to building a workforce that is competent, ethical, and aligned with its vision of global impact. Through the ASPIRE Empowerment and Welfare Committee, the University continues to invest in human capital development, recognizing that a motivated and well-informed workforce is essential to institutional success.
